August
2005 25
YEARS for
David East Yachting David
East Yachting was founded on 1st August 1980, and soon afterwards moved into its
present offices in Quay Street, Woodbridge, 100 yards from the River Deben; one
of the most beautiful estuaries of England's North Sea coast. The company is owned
and controlled by David and Serica ("Ricky") East. David was no stranger
to yacht broking; nor to Quay Street; having already been broking there since
early 1962. David
and Ricky share a passion for sailing and for sailing vessels, as do the rest
of our team. It's a case of a hobby becoming a business, though has the downside
of much reducing the 'sailing' aspect of the hobby! Throughout our firms passage
in the world marketplace, we have been helped by many factors, all of them people.
First to drive us forward was our old friend, the late Hedley Robinson, who stepped
in with a loan to enable our offices to be bought. Hedley was the cornerstone
and we paid him back. Our very first client was Dick Steele, to whom we sold the
pretty Sparkman & Stephens designed / Moody built sloop JOSEPHINE. Dick is
an accomplished aviator and now owns Sandown Airport (www.isleofwightairport.co.uk)
on the Isle of Wight. Soon, along came Bruce Owen, whose Swan we sold to former
Royal Cape Town Y.C commodore, Harold Sender. Both have now passed away. Harold
recommended us to another Cape Town sailor, who was the first of several clients
to buy a yacht from us "sight unseen" and remains a very special friend.
Former Yachting World editor, Bernard Hayman, asked us to sell his Buchanan sloop
BARBICAN: the first English yacht to visit Russia after World War II. Even then,
BARBICAN was far too small for us to handle but we took her on, of course! Some
weeks later, Bernard called to say that he'd sold BARBICAN to his son. David congratulated
Bernard on the deal; speculating (correctly) that he would still have use of his
yacht! Bernard laughed at that and said "I want your bill". David responded,
"Bernard, my old friend, I have not sunk so low as to charge a man for selling
his boat to his son. Bugger off!" Bernard replied with a smile "I knew
you would say that". If one had compiled a list of the most honourable men
in the world, Bernard would have featured very high on it. We are truly grateful
to those good and honourable guys who continue to come to us, boat after boat
and have become our friends. We
owe a debt of gratitude to the people who have worked with us over the years and
sometimes moved on. During our 25th year and now joined by our old friend Tony
James as a director and company secretary, we had the best team anyone could wish
for and it was also the firm's most successful year to date. We sold the beautiful
112ft Bruce King/ Renaissance Yachts ketch SIGNE for the second time; were absolutely
delighted to sell dear old SINTRA for two old friends and amongst several others,
the very impressive Ed Dubois/ Fitzroy Yachts 122ft sloop MIDNIGHT to new friends.
David East Yachting
has moved way up market from the good training ground of its modest beginnings.
We are very experienced sailboat specialists and offer a particular service in
which we are noted for the high quality technical presentation and photography
of our clients' yachts. So, if you are looking to acquire, or sell, a large sailing
yacht, you might appreciate the benefits of our professionalism, stamina and integrity.
